Can Delaying Menopause Extend Life?

Scientists are exploring if keeping the ovaries functioning longer could delay menopause and prevent age-related diseases.

Announced by First Lady Jill Biden, a new White House women’s health initiative highlights research on prolonging ovarian function. The ovaries play a crucial role in women’s health, and their early failure triggers menopause, increasing risks for diseases like heart disease and dementia. By extending ovarian function, researchers believe women’s overall health and longevity might improve.

Studies show that delaying ovarian aging could benefit health. For example, ovarian transplants in mice have extended their lifespan. Scientists are now testing drugs like rapamycin to slow down egg loss in women. These efforts aim not to extend fertility indefinitely but to enhance health during aging.
